Travel Diary |Costa Rica

Hola friends, welcome back!

I know, I know, another post on the beautiful country of Costa Rica. I promise I will stop soon. 😉

This is one of my favorite travel videos I have ever made. I had so much fun capturing these little moments, and putting them all together. I’ve probably watched this video 60 times since I finished it a couple days ago, and I am not even ashamed.

It makes me nostalgic, it makes me happy, and it makes me so grateful for this life I’m living, and that is the exact reason why I make these.

Also, I decided to post this video that our friend, Hoku, made from our trip. Just don’t compare it to mine. 😉 He’s amazing at what he does! You can find him on Instagram @hokucurnan

Thanks for watching!

Costa Rica- with our Costa Crew

IMG_0264Hola again my friends, the post travel depression has officially hit. I have been scrolling through these photos for the last two weeks, and as happy as I am to share them, I can’t help but wish I was still there. (I know, I know-DUH!) Also, I just finished my travel video and I am so excited to share that with you, but first- Blog Post!IMG_0143ACYH8582NGTE8661Do any of you that travel with friends often have names for the groups you go with? Our group we went to China with has a group chat called ILPeeps (since the program was ILP), then we have our bestchinafam- who are our best friends from China, and now we have our Costa Crew. IMG_7887IMG_7480FDVW2238Our Costa crew started back in summer of last year when Derek and I talked to our friend Nik about planning a trip with a group of friends. We talked about Thailand and Costa Rica. A few of our friends decided that they were going to Costa Rica in the fall, and since we would be in China, we wouldn’t be able to go. We thought that’s okay, we will make it Thailand next year.

IMG_7882IMG_7884When they ended up not going to Costa Rica in the fall, we talked to Nik about planning our trip when we got back. We mentioned Thailand again, but just coming home from Asia and dreading that 22 hour travel time again, we decided that Costa Rica would be a better option at the time. A few weeks past, we invited friends here and there, and since we didn’t want it to end up being a thing we just once talked about like it was last summer, we bought our plane tickets with our next paycheck.UJBV8346

IMG_0133IMG_7906Our Costa Crew was made up of old friends, new friends, friends of friends, and complete strangers. And it was perfect. There was 12 of us that went which made it the perfect size group for renting our airbnb’s (for cheap!) and using two rental cars.IMG_7900IMG_7605IMG_7672IMG_7370We spent our days in the sun-surfing, boogie boarding, skim boarding, swimming, zip lining, and hiking, and indulging in way too much food.IMG_7821.JPGJLZVE0722IMG_7795IMG_0243Leslie and I also went through a butterfly observatory, and I hugged every puppy I saw.IMG_0310IMG_7565IMG_7762We spent our nights having heart to heart conversations, laughing until we cried, and dancing the night away. (Seriously I don’t think I have ever danced so much in one week.) IMG_7481IMG_7522IMG_7654IMG_7506Being to three new countries in the last year all with a different group of people, I have learned a lot about traveling with people, weather they are friends or complete strangers. And me being me, I am going to share a few of those lessons I have learned:

  1. Everyone travels differently, and that is okay. Some people prefer fancy hotels, while other people are fine camping on the beach. Some people prefer having a detailed itinerary months before they depart, and other people buy the plane ticket and just figure it out. Everyone has different personalities, accept this before you leave and learn to go with the flow. It is part of traveling with groups.

VXAX1176IMG_77592. It’s up to your mindset how the trip goes. You know me, I believe in the power of the mind, but it is true. Things are going to go wrong, spending 8 days straight with the same people may drive you crazy. Not everyone is going to always agree on things, but if you have in your mind that you’re in a new part of the world with people who have similar interests and dreams as you, it will be hard not to have the time of your life. IMG_7683Processed with VSCO with m5 presetProcessed with VSCO with m5 preset

IMG_76503.The bond you make with these people will be strong. Like really strong. From drunk dancing to backstreet boys at 3AM to having to translate and play charades to the locals together- you will have very intimate moments with the people you travel with. The strangers will become friends, and your friends will become better friends. I may not see these people often, or even talk to a few of them again, but I will always cherish the memories I made with them just because they are a part of some of the best memories of my life. And that is a bond that we would never make sitting at home.IMG_7720

IMG_7888IMG_7889Just like my China fam, I will love my Costa crew forever. This week was the perfect week to kick off our summer, and it makes me so excited for the new memories and adventures in our future. I hope you are all following your dreams, finding your people, and taking advantage of this beautiful world we live in.

The beauty of Costa Rica-My point of view

IMG_7404 (2)

Hola friends!

I decided to split our travel photos from Costa Rica into two separate blog posts, since I have way too many to put them all in one. This post features all of the photos I personally took to showcase the beauty of Costa Rica.  (besides the one above, thanks husband) The next post will be more like a journal entry with photos of us and our “Costa Crew”.

I am also currently working on a video!

32454270_1637138673005882_3669272457409200128_nWhen our friend, Nik, and us decided that Costa Rica was the perfect spot for our vacation, I immediately started researching what was there besides tropical beauty. I learned that Costa Rica is known for a few things; surfing, sloths, coffee, chocolate, monkeys, and beautiful landscapes of jungle and oceans. We experienced it all, including seeing this sloth on the side of the road. 32392194_1637145449671871_813621046727933952_n32532366_1637145436338539_680461392511238144_n

*This butterfly can disguise itself as an owl or a snake*

Like most places we visit, the beauty did not disappoint. In fact, Derek and I were both surprised how beautiful it truly was. It felt a lot like Hawaii to us, the main difference being the cost of everything, and the locals speaking Spanish.

La Fortuna was in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle, and Jaco was the perfect little beach town. We spent our time swimming in the ocean, hiking through jungles, zip-lining through a forest, rafting down a river, chasing waterfalls, and indulging in way too much food.

As I get older, I’ve had chances to experience places I never planned on seeing and have realized that no matter where I’m at in this world, I will always find beauty.  The more I go-the more I want to see. I know that list will probably never be completed, but I am happy to constantly be adding to it and making memories while doing so. So goodbye bucket list, HELLO WORLD. I am also so happy to have a piece of my heart left in a new place, and to have my best friend by my side to experience it all with me. I will never take that for granted.

This world is beautiful, please take every chance you get to go see it.32687058_1637138666339216_6634555330682421248_n32369720_1637138133005936_8607354335107481600_n

From Spring to Summer-Life update

32407104_1635974573122292_3279078045821960192_nWe’ve been so busy with friends, family, vacations, and celebrations, that I haven’t had time to write for about a month. Since I usually blog one-two times a week, this has made me miss it so much. But the time spent with the people we love most in this world, and the memories we have made in the last few weeks have been so worth missing a little time for my personal hobby.

32367051_1635980729788343_7831806038859841536_n32454851_1635978783121871_379640959681429504_n (1)

Since I mostly blog for myself, and to keep track of where I was at in life at a certain time, I decided that this post will be a little life update since so much has happened, and I haven’t found the time to write about it. (I know I know, you’d rather see my travel pictures from Costa Rica) I promise those will all be posted soon, as well as a video. Just give me some more time. 😉

Exactly a month ago, Derek’s sister, Shara got married. I was lucky enough to be her maid of honor. It was the most perfect day, and I was so excited to be apart of the whole planning process and the bridal party. I am so happy for her and Axel, I can’t wait to see the professional photos!

31206473_1618020254917724_5864666169243336704_nA few days after that, on April 19th, we celebrated Derek’s birthday. He turned 25! I can not believe how old we are getting, but I am so proud of the person he’s grown into and am so excited to spend another year with him by my side. I am so lucky to grow old with the same person I grew up with. His life is my most favorite part of mine and I love celebrating the day it began. We both worked on his birthday and then went to dinner with his family. We didn’t take any pictures, so here’s a cute selfie of us in Costa Rica. 32418018_1635978623121887_8536932114292015104_nThat following weekend, we had a few friends that we met in China come stay with us. They all live in different areas of Utah, but we haven’t had the chance to see them since we were all on the other side of the world. We went hiking in Snow Canyon and showed them our favorite restaurants around Saint George. Even though these people were complete strangers only a year ago, the connections I have with them are some of the deepest connections I’ve ever had. It amazes me what traveling together can do to friendships. I love them all so much, and was so happy to catch up and spend time with them.

The following weekend, Alyssa was in town from Salt Lake to celebrate her birthday.  Yup, more visitors and another birthday. (I told you we are busy). Even though I don’t see her as often as I would like, she still makes me laugh until I cry and nothing ever changes when we are together. She’s my ride or die, and I am so thankful for her and the day she was born.

This last weekend, we celebrated Mother’s Day AND my mom’s birthday. (Are you even surprised?) Her birthday is on May 13th, so it’s always within the same week as Mother’s Day, but this year it was actually on the same day! Even though she is getting older, she hasn’t aged a day since the early 2000s. JUST LOOK AT HER.

I had to work our annual Mother’s Day brunch at the golf club, but since it was my mom’s birthday and Whitney, Tyler, and the girls were in town, my family decided to come into my work to celebrate. Derek, Shara and their parents even joined. It was so fun to have my whole family, including my in laws, and my grandparents, visit me at work and celebrate the beautiful mothers in my life together as one big family.

32326704_1635974576455625_7136732377333628928_nThrough Derek finishing finals, working full time, the bachelorette party in Vegas, the wedding, celebrating birthdays, my grandpa going into surgery for a new knee, packing our bags and leaving to Costa Rica for a week, and celebrating Mother’s Day, I have noticed and been focusing on a very important thing. And that is the connection I have with the people around me. Whether that is family, old friends, friends of friends, friends of family, or new friends- I love the people around me with all of my heart. And it’s become one of my favorite qualities about myself.

32389758_1635978636455219_8773640337638817792_nIt’s been a long time coming, but I have taught myself to accept people for who they are and always try to understand where they are coming from. Lately I have learned to let go of all my grudges and forgive. People change, life changes, sometimes our connections grow stronger and sometimes they fade away, but we are all trying our best. The people in my life are my most prized possessions, and I am so thankful for the connections I have with every single one of them.

32416465_1635980713121678_4793452474662912000_n32512044_1635974643122285_9111136608605700096_nHere’s to a very happy Summer! I hope you all find your people, and if you’ve already found them, remember to reach out to them, hold them close, and love each one of them with all of your heart.

Note to self: Human connection is the most important thing in this life, don’t ever forget that.

Onto the next adventure, Wren
